How to use Merge PDF
- Choose two or more PDF files in the required order.
- Check the filenames and combined size.
- Select Merge PDFs and download the result.
What this tool changes
The tool copies each source page into a new PDF in selection order. It does not rasterise normal pages, so existing text and images remain in PDF form.

There is no drag-and-drop sorter. To change the order, choose the files again in the sequence you want.
Getting the file order right
The names listed under the dropzone, separated by dots, are the order the pages will follow in merged.pdf. Choosing files again replaces the whole selection rather than adding to it, so a forgotten appendix means picking every file again, not just the missing one. If the list keeps coming out in the wrong sequence, renaming the files with a 01, 02, 03 prefix and selecting them in that order is usually the quickest fix. Selecting a single PDF is not enough: the tool stops with Choose at least two PDFs to merge.
Limits that apply to the whole merge
Each PDF can be up to 60 MB and 250 pages, the selection together must stay within 120 MB, and the finished document must also stay within 250 pages. Two 150-page reports pass the per-file checks but fail while being joined, with The merged PDF exceeds the 250-page limit. In that case make two merged volumes, or remove unneeded pages from one source first. Three 40 MB scans fit the combined allowance exactly, so adding a fourth file of any size is refused before anything is read.
What the merged document contains
Every page of every selected file is copied, in full; there is no page picker on this tool. To leave pages out, trim a source first with Delete PDF Pages or keep only a list with Extract PDF Pages. Because pages are copied rather than redrawn as pictures, text that could be selected or searched in a source still can be in the merged copy. The new file starts without the title or author of any source, so a viewer typically shows the filename instead.
How to combine PDF files into one document
Choose or drop two or more PDFs in the order you want them to appear. The dropzone says “Choose or drop files here” and accepts PDF files, 60 MB each. PDF North then copies every page from the first file, then the second, and each file after it, into one download named merged.pdf. The summary under the dropzone shows how many files you chose, their combined size, and the filenames with a middle dot between them. There is no drag-and-drop sorter after that list appears. If the sequence is wrong, choose the files again before you press Merge PDFs. One PDF is not a merge: the file list can show a single name, but pressing Merge PDFs then stops with “Choose at least two PDFs to merge.”
Merge invoices, reports, contracts or scanned pages
A single combined PDF is easier to email, archive or submit than a folder of separate documents. You can join monthly invoices, add an appendix to a report, put contract sections in reading order, or place scanned pages into one file. The originals stay on your device. The merger copies existing PDF pages. It does not redraw them as images, so ordinary text stays selectable and each page keeps its own width and height. That is the opposite of compression, which rebuilds pages as pictures to chase a smaller file.
A worked example: cover, report and appendix
You have cover.pdf (one page), report.pdf (ten pages) and appendix.pdf (four pages). Choose the cover first, the report second and the appendix last. The summary should read 3 files, then the combined size, then those three names in that order. The download is labelled Merged PDF and the file is merged.pdf. Page 1 is the cover, pages 2–11 are the report, and pages 12–15 are the appendix. If appendix.pdf appears first in the list, select the three files again. You cannot drag the names into a new order on this page. The summary does not show a page count before you merge, because several files are selected, and there is no first-page preview for that selection either.
Merge and combine are the same job here
On PDF North, merge and combine both mean one new PDF in selection order. Some other products use “combine” for a zip of the originals or for a PDF portfolio. This tool does neither. It does not wrap the files in a zip, and it does not leave them as attachments inside a portfolio. The short vocabulary note is merge vs combine. A packet of invoices or exhibits has its own working order on combine PDF files. The live control is still the Merge PDFs button on this page. Merge PDF in your browser is the longer note on the no-upload path. Merge PDF for one email attachment is the note for sending that download from your own mail app.
Why the filename list is the page order
Every page of each selected document is copied in sequence. A cover, then a report, then an appendix produces that reading order and no other. Pages that are already wrong inside one file are copied as they are. Fix that file first with Reorder PDF Pages, which asks you to type every page number once, such as 3,1,2. You can also reorder the finished download. To drop a blank sheet before it joins the packet, use Delete PDF Pages. To keep only a chapter, use Extract PDF Pages and merge that smaller PDF. Split PDF is the opposite job: it cuts one document into consecutive parts, each as its own download, and it does not aim at a file size or follow bookmarks.
What a merge does not change
Merging does not shrink the file. The download is usually about as large as the sources added together, because the tool copies pages rather than compressing images. If a mailbox or a form then rejects merged.pdf, use Compress PDF and accept flattened pages. Mixed paper sizes stay mixed. A US Letter page and an A4 page keep their own dimensions in the same file. Use Resize PDF Pages afterwards if every sheet must match. This tool does not add a watermark, a table of contents or page numbers.
Visible page content is copied. Bookmarks, interactive form fields and certificate-backed signatures are not guaranteed to carry into the new file. Open the download and keep the originals until you have checked it. Password-protected PDFs are not supported. The tool says so instead of unlocking the file. Number the finished packet with Add PDF Page Numbers. Labels drawn on the separate files stay as they were when you join them, which is why page numbers after a merge belong on the combined copy only. A visible signature, if you need one, also belongs on that combined copy. Sign PDF draws or types an electronic mark. It is not a certificate.
Private processing, and why a phone can still fail
Selected files are read and joined inside this browser tab. PDF North does not receive the documents, keep an account copy, or add them to a job history. The merge step does not post the file. You can confirm that in the browser’s Network tab while the job runs: the PDF is not sent as an upload. The page may still request its own script from this site. That request is not your document.
The browser has to hold every selected PDF in memory while it builds the new one. Each file must be 60 MB or smaller, the whole selection must stay within 120 MB, and the combined document must stay within 250 pages. At least two files are required, and there is no higher file-count cap besides those limits. They are stability limits, not an upload cap. A phone can run out of memory before them, especially with photo scans, and the tab then fails even though no file was over the limit. Close other tabs, merge fewer or smaller PDFs, or finish the job on a computer. A very large selection is a device limit, not a queue on a conversion server.
After you download merged.pdf
Open merged.pdf before you delete any source. Check that every section is present and that the first and last pages are the ones you expected. The result row is labelled Merged PDF and shows the new file’s size. It does not claim the file got smaller. If the copy will leave its original workflow, Remove PDF Metadata can clear document information and XMP on the finished file. It does not redact text that is visible on the page. Run it after the merge, so properties from this last edit do not travel with the copy you send.
Frequently asked questions
Does merging upload my PDFs?
No. PDF North reads the files you select in this browser tab and copies their pages into a new PDF named merged.pdf. The merge does not post those files. The site does not keep an account copy.
Will the merged PDF be smaller?
No. Merging copies existing pages into one file named merged.pdf, so the download is usually about as large as the sources combined. It does not compress images and it does not pack the originals into a zip. Use Compress PDF only if you need a smaller file and accept flattened pages.
How do I control the order of the merged files?
There is no drag-and-drop sorter after you pick the files. The filename list under the dropzone is the page order, shown with the file count and the combined size. Pages from the first name come first. To change that order, choose the files again. If the pages inside one PDF are already wrong, fix that file with Reorder PDF Pages before you merge.
Do bookmarks, forms and signatures survive a merge?
Visible page content is copied, but bookmarks, interactive forms and certificate-backed signatures are not guaranteed to carry into the combined file. Open merged.pdf and keep the originals until you have checked it. Password-protected PDFs are not supported.
Why does Merge PDF fail on a phone before the size limit?
The browser has to hold every selected PDF in memory while it copies the pages. A phone can run out of memory before the published caps, especially with photo scans. Close other tabs, merge fewer or smaller files, or finish the job on a computer. Each file must still be 60 MB or smaller, the whole selection must stay within 120 MB, and the combined document must stay within 250 pages.
Do mixed page sizes stay mixed after a merge?
Yes. A US Letter page and an A4 page are copied with their own dimensions into the download named merged.pdf. Merge PDF does not force one paper size and it does not add page numbers. Use Resize PDF Pages afterwards if every sheet must match.
