Add Page Numbers After You Merge a PDF
Page numbers stamped on each source file become wrong the moment you merge, delete or reorder. Add them to the finished PDF. The tool draws a label on the pages you choose — a plain number, “Page 1”, “1 of 12” or “Page 1 of 12” — and leaves the original file on your device.
How to do this in PDF North
- Merge, delete blanks and reorder until the PDF you will send is final.
- Open Add PDF Page Numbers, set the format, the first and last PDF pages, and the starting number.
- Download, then check the cover and the last page. The labels sit on top of existing footer text.
Worked example: a 16-page packet with a blank cover
You merged a one-page cover, an 11-page report and a 4-page appendix. The file has 16 PDF pages. You want the cover unmarked, and the first report page to read “Page 1 of 15”. Set number format to Page 1 of 12 (the control’s sample; the real numbers replace 1 and 12), position to bottom centre, first PDF page to 2, last PDF page to 16, starting number to 1, font size 12. Fifteen pages are labelled. The last number is the starting number plus 14, so the footer runs from “Page 1 of 15” on PDF page 2 through “Page 15 of 15” on PDF page 16. The “of 15” is the last label in that sequence, not the file’s 16-page count. If readers should instead see the same index as a PDF viewer, set the starting number to 2: PDF page 2 then reads “Page 2 of 16” and PDF page 16 reads “Page 16 of 16”, while the cover stays blank.
Number the merged file, not the pieces
Labels are ordinary text drawn onto the page. They are not a live field that updates when you merge again. If you number three invoices and then merge them, each invoice still shows its old “page 1”. Delete blank sheets and reorder first, then number once. A range the document does not contain is rejected. First page 2 on a one-page file fails. The count formats use the last printed number in the range you selected, which is why skipping a cover changes the “of” total unless you also raise the starting number.
What this numbering will not print
There is no Bates prefix, no “EX-001”, and no different format on the appendix. Font size is 8 to 32. Positions are the six top and bottom edges: left, centre or right. The colour is a fixed dark ink, not a colour picker. Numbers can cover a footer that is already printed; they do not replace that text, they sit on top of it. Check the download. This does not flatten pages into images, and it does not promise that form fields or an existing certificate survive the save. Do not number a file whose current digital signature must stay valid. Processing stays in this browser. The tool page at Add PDF Page Numbers is the workspace; this guide is only the after-merge arithmetic.
Frequently asked questions
Should I add page numbers before or after merging?
After. Numbers drawn on the separate files stay as they were when you join them. Merge, delete and reorder first, then number the copy you will send.
How do I leave a cover unnumbered and start at 1?
Set the first PDF page to 2 and the starting number to 1. The cover gets no new label. The second PDF page shows 1.
Why does the footer say of 15 when the PDF has 16 pages?
Count formats use the last number in the sequence you asked for. Skipping the cover and starting at 1 labels 15 pages, so the total is 15. Start at 2 if you want of 16 while the cover stays blank.
Can I print a Bates number such as EX-001?
No. The formats are a plain number, Page 1, 1 of 12, and Page 1 of 12. There is no prefix field.
Will the new numbers erase the footer that is already there?
No. The label is drawn on top of the page. If it covers existing text, change the position or font size and run the tool again on the original.
Does numbering a merged PDF upload it?
No. The labels are written in this browser tab. The source file is not overwritten, and PDF North does not receive it.
