Merge PDFs into One Email Attachment

Some inboxes want one PDF, not a zip of three. Merge PDF copies pages from each file into that single attachment, in the order you select them. The download is usually about as large as the sources added together. Shrinking a scan for a size cap is a different job, on compress for email. Building an exhibit binder is combine PDF files. This page is the send decision: one attachment, or several.

Open Merge PDF

Your file stays private. PDF North tools run in this browser tab. Following a guide and opening a tool does not upload the document.

How to do this in PDF North

  1. Confirm the recipient asked for one PDF. If the form has a separate slot per document, do not merge.
  2. Open Merge PDF and select the files in reading order, then check the filename list and the combined size.
  3. Download the one PDF, open it, and attach that copy yourself. PDF North does not send the email.

Worked example: three March files, one reply

An accountant asks for “the three March invoices as one PDF.” On disk you have a one-page cover note at 180 KB, a two-page digital invoice at 420 KB, and a photographed receipt at 6.4 MB. Select them in that order. The merged download is one PDF of about 7 MB with four pages: the digital pages stay selectable text, and the receipt stays a picture inside the PDF. Merging did not compress anything. A consumer Gmail message can carry that 7 MB file — the published attachment ceiling is 25 MB, with encoding overhead, which is why compress for Gmail exists for scans that actually miss the cap. A portal that said 5 MB will still reject this merge, because the receipt dominates. Replace or compress that scan before you join the files; flattening the invoice text will not fix a 6.4 MB photo.

When one attachment is the wrong email

Keep separate files when the recipient’s form has one upload box per document, when a certificate-backed signature on a source must stay valid, or when the combined selection would pass 120 MB or 250 pages. Each source is also limited to 60 MB. Those are browser-memory limits, not a mail server’s rules. Password-protected PDFs are not supported. If the message must stay as several readable parts, Split PDF divides one long file into consecutive groups; it does not pick scattered pages.

Order, then decorate, then send

There is no drag-and-drop sorter after you pick the files. The filename list is the page order. To change it, select the files again. Add page numbers only after this order is final — see page numbers after a merge. A visible signature belongs on the combined copy, not on each piece, and it is an electronic mark rather than a certificate. Strip metadata last if the copy will leave its original workflow. Merge in the browser explains the no-upload path; this page does not repeat it. You still attach the download in your own mail app.

Frequently asked questions

Does merging PDFs make the email attachment smaller?

No. The tool copies existing pages, so the new file is usually about as large as the sources combined. Use Compress PDF only when a size cap remains and you accept flattened pages.

Should I merge, or attach each PDF separately?

Merge when the person asked for one PDF. Keep separate attachments when a form has a slot per document, or when joining the files would break a certificate you must keep valid.

Will invoice text stay selectable after I merge for email?

Yes for ordinary digital pages, because they are copied rather than photographed again. A page that was already a scan stays a picture. Compression is the step that removes selectable text.

What if the mailbox rejects the merged PDF?

The join made one larger file. Extract or delete pages you do not need, or compress the image-heavy part and accept flattening. A 7 MB mix of text and one photo often fits Gmail and still fails a 5 MB portal.

Does PDF North email the file or upload it?

No. The PDFs are joined in this browser tab. You download the result and attach it in your mail app. PDF North does not receive the documents.

Can I change the attachment order after merging?

Choose the files again in Merge PDF in the sequence the recipient should read. The tool does not offer a drag-and-drop list after the first selection.
