How to use Resize PDF Pages
- Choose one PDF.
- Select a standard or custom page size, orientation, fit mode and optional margin.
- Resize every page and download the new PDF after checking the layout.
What this tool changes
The tool creates a target sheet for every source page, embeds the existing PDF page as scalable content and centres it using the chosen fit or fill rule. It does not deliberately rasterise normal page content.

Fit preserves the complete visible page and can add white space; fill covers the target sheet but can crop edges. Embedded page content is preserved as PDF content, but forms, annotations, links, bookmarks, accessibility tags and digital signatures may not carry into the rebuilt document. Every page in the file is resized, because there is no page-range option, so take out any pages that should keep their current size before you start. Each new sheet is painted white before the source page is placed on it, which is why Fit leaves white bands rather than transparent ones. A page that a viewer shows turned through a rotation setting is measured as it appears on screen and drawn upright on its new sheet. Custom sides typed in millimetres must be at least 12.7 mm and at most 1524 mm, so a 10 mm side is refused with an error. Scaling up, for example from A5 to A3, keeps text and vector drawings sharp, but photos and scans inside the page are enlarged and can look softer. The resized copy is a new document, so the title and author properties of the source are not copied across.
Resize PDF pages for printing, filing or submission
Use this tool when a PDF has the wrong paper dimensions or combines pages with inconsistent sizes. It creates a new document whose sheets use A3, A4, A5, US Letter, US Legal or dimensions you enter. Every source page is placed in the centre of its new sheet inside this browser. The original stays unchanged and is not uploaded to PDF North.
Changing page dimensions is different from compressing a file. Resize controls the physical page box used by PDF readers and printers; it does not promise a smaller file. The source page is embedded as PDF content rather than intentionally converted to an image, so ordinary text and line art can remain sharp when scaled. Use Compress PDF instead when the main job is reducing megabytes for an email or upload limit.
Choose A4, Letter or another standard page size
A-series presets follow ISO 216 dimensions: A3 is 297 × 420 mm, A4 is 210 × 297 mm and A5 is 148 × 210 mm. A4 is common for office documents in many countries. US Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches, while US Legal is 8.5 × 14 inches. Select the size requested by the printer, form, portal or recipient instead of assuming that visually similar sheets are interchangeable.
Portrait, landscape and automatic orientation
Portrait forces every target sheet to be taller than it is wide. Landscape makes every sheet wider than it is tall. Match each source page inspects the displayed orientation page by page, which is useful for a report containing portrait prose and landscape tables. That automatic choice can produce mixed orientations while keeping one consistent paper standard.
Fit the whole page or fill the sheet
Fit whole page scales each source page until all visible content fits inside the target sheet. It preserves the full page, but mismatched proportions create white space at the top and bottom or sides. This is the safer option for contracts, forms, reports and anything where a clipped edge could remove text.
Fill and crop edges scales the source until it covers the complete target sheet. Content that falls outside the new page boundary is clipped. Fill can suit artwork or full-bleed visual pages, but it is risky for text placed near an edge. Review every page of the downloaded PDF before printing or submitting it.
Add a white margin
Margins apply only in Fit mode. Enter 0 for the largest possible fitted page, or add up to 50 mm of white space on every side. A margin can keep content away from a printer's non-printable edge or create room for binding and notes. If the chosen margin would leave no usable page area, the tool stops with a clear error instead of producing an empty sheet.
Use custom PDF dimensions carefully
Choose Custom size to enter width and height in millimetres or inches. Both sides must be between 0.5 and 60 inches after conversion. Orientation still applies: portrait uses the shorter value as the width, while landscape uses the longer value as the width. Confirm the exact finished size required by the destination, especially for labels, booklets, posters or specialist print workflows.
What can change when pages are rebuilt?
The visible source page is embedded onto a new white sheet. Ordinary page content is preserved as PDF content, but document structures outside that visible page are not guaranteed to carry. Interactive form fields, annotations, clickable links, bookmarks, attachments, accessibility tags and certificate-backed digital signatures may be lost or invalidated. Do not resize a form that must remain fillable or a signed document whose certificate status must be preserved.
Page boxes such as CropBox, TrimBox and BleedBox are replaced by the new sheet dimensions. Fill mode clips content at that boundary. Transparency and unusual blending can vary in specialised documents, so keep the source and inspect the output in a trusted reader. Password-protected PDFs are not supported.
A practical order for PDF page preparation
First remove pages you do not need with Delete PDF Pages and fix the sequence with Reorder PDF Pages. Resize after the page set is final. If a sideways page needs correction, use Rotate PDF before or after resizing and inspect the result. Add page numbers, watermarks or an electronic signature only after the dimensions are final so those marks align with the finished sheet.
Private processing and device limits
PDF North reads the selected document in local browser memory and creates a temporary download URL. The file is not sent to PDF North. Close or reload the tab to release the temporary URL. Documents are limited to 60 MB and 250 pages to reduce browser-memory failures, though a complex file can still take longer on a phone. Always retain the original until the resized copy has been opened, measured and checked page by page.
Frequently asked questions
Does resizing a PDF also compress it?
No. Resize changes the page dimensions used by readers and printers. It embeds the existing page as PDF content rather than turning it into an image, so it does not promise a smaller file. Use Compress PDF when the job is reducing megabytes and you accept flattened pages.
What is the difference between Fit and Fill?
Fit scales the whole page inside the new sheet and can leave white space. Fill covers the sheet and can crop the edges. Fit is the safer choice for contracts and forms. Check every page of the download before you print or submit it.
Which page sizes can I resize to?
Presets are A3, A4, A5, US Letter and US Legal. Custom size accepts millimetres or inches, with each side between 0.5 and 60 inches. Orientation can follow each source page, or you can force portrait or landscape for every sheet.
Will forms and digital signatures survive a resize?
Ordinary visible content is placed on a new sheet, but form fields, annotations, links, bookmarks, accessibility tags and certificate-backed signatures may be lost or invalidated. Do not resize a fillable form or a signed file whose certificate must stay valid. Password-protected PDFs are not supported, and processing stays in this browser.
How much white space does Fit add when US Letter pages go to A4?
With a 0 mm margin, a US Letter page is scaled to about 97% so that its width matches A4, which leaves a white band of about 12.6 mm at the top and another at the bottom. Going the other way, an A4 page fitted onto US Letter shrinks to about 94% and gains roughly 9.2 mm of white space on the left and on the right. Fill avoids those bands by scaling up instead: Letter to A4 trims about 9.8 mm from each side, and A4 to Letter trims about 13 mm from the top and from the bottom.
What is the resized file called and what does the result line show?
The download keeps the original name and adds -resized, so thesis.pdf becomes thesis-resized.pdf. The line next to the Download button gives the page count, the paper size, an orientation and the placement mode, for example 12 pages · A4 portrait · fit. When orientation is set to Match each source page and the file mixes portrait and landscape sheets, that orientation word describes the last page only, so open the PDF to check the rest.
