Compress a Scanned PDF
A scanned PDF is already a stack of pictures, which is why it is large and why compression can help. PDF North rebuilds those pages in this browser and shows the new size. It does not promise a megabyte target, and it will not keep a hidden text layer if the scan had one.
How to do this in PDF North
- Delete blank backs and any pages you will not send. Rotate sideways sheets before you compress, so you judge the scan the right way up.
- Open Compress PDF, run Balanced, then open the download at normal zoom and read the labelled size.
- Try Stronger only if a real size cap remains and stamps and small type are still legible. Keep the uncompressed scan until that copy is accepted.
Why scans shrink when digital PDFs often do not
A photocopier or phone capture stores each page as a large image. Rebuilding that image at a lower quality is what gets smaller. A report exported from a word processor is mostly text and may barely change. If you can highlight a sentence that was typed, not photographed, this page is the wrong job. Use a destination guide such as Outlook or 1 MB only when that destination is the actual limit.
What the rebuild does to a scan
Compression paints each page. An image-only scan had no selectable text to save. If someone had already run OCR and added a text layer, that layer is removed. This is not an OCR tool. Extract text from a scanned PDF explains that limit. Links and form fields, which are rare on scans, are flattened too. The original file on your device is not overwritten.
Clean the scan, then choose a quality
Blank sheets still cost bytes. Delete them first, or extract the pages you will send. Rotate a sideways stack before compression so you can see whether the type survived. Balanced is the right start for a typical office scan. If the form named 1 MB or 2 MB, move to compress to 1 MB or compress to 2 MB after the stack is shorter. Splitting a long muddy scan beats Maximum on every page.
Frequently asked questions
Will compressing a scan keep it looking like the original?
At Balanced, a typical office scan stays readable. Stronger and Maximum trade more detail for a smaller file. Check stamps and small type before you delete the original.
Does compressing a scanned PDF add OCR or keep existing OCR?
No. The tool does not recognise text. A text layer that was already on the scan is flattened away.
Should I compress a scan before or after deleting blank pages?
After. Blank backs still take space. Delete or extract the pages you will send, then compress that shorter file.
Why did my scanned PDF barely get smaller?
It may already be a compact black-and-white scan, or the file may be a digital PDF that only looks scanned. Try to select a sentence. Typed text is not a photo scan.
Is the scanned PDF uploaded to compress it?
No. Rendering stays in this browser. PDF North does not receive the file.
Can I force a scanned PDF down to a specific megabyte size?
No. The result panel shows the new size. Use the 1 MB or 2 MB guide when the form named that cap, and stop if the type is no longer readable.
