Compress a PDF to Send on WhatsApp
WhatsApp document limits vary by app version and account, and they are independent of Gmail’s 25 MB rule. A multi-page phone scan is the usual failure. PDF North rebuilds those pages locally so you can try a smaller copy before you open the chat share sheet.
How to do this in PDF North
- If the “PDF” is still a stack of camera photos, convert only the needed shots with JPG to PDF first.
- Compress the PDF at Balanced, then check the labelled size and a couple of pages at readable zoom.
- Share the download in WhatsApp. If the chat still rejects it, split into fewer pages or try Stronger — do not flatten a file that already sends.
WhatsApp is not email
A file that Gmail accepts can still fail in a chat. WhatsApp’s document ceiling has moved over time (historically much lower than today’s generous caps on some clients). Treat the share sheet as the authority: if it refuses the file, reduce pages or quality. Do not assume a 100 MB marketing number applies to every phone and recipient.
Photos are the usual culprit
People photograph a contract at full camera resolution, then wonder why a “two-page PDF” is 18 MB. Convert a smaller export of those photos, or extract the signed page. Compression flattens text, so a digitally exported contract should be split or extracted before you rebuild it as images.
Private until you tap Send
PDF North never sees the document. WhatsApp only receives it when you attach the download in the chat. That is useful for IDs and medical letters, and it is not end-to-end encryption of the PDF itself — the chat’s own encryption starts after you send. For mailbox caps, use Gmail or the generic email guide instead.
Frequently asked questions
What is the WhatsApp PDF size limit?
It depends on the app version and account. This page does not invent a single megabyte number. Compress, read the new size, and let the share sheet accept or refuse the file.
Can I send a PDF on WhatsApp without uploading it to PDF North?
Yes. Compression is local. WhatsApp receives only the file you attach in the chat.
Should I compress before or after photographing pages?
Capture or export smaller images first, then make the PDF. Compressing a huge camera-roll PDF is the expensive way to fix the same problem.
