How to use Rotate PDF
- Choose a PDF.
- Select 90, 180 or 270 degrees.
- Rotate and download the corrected PDF.
What this tool changes
The tool updates each page's rotation setting rather than taking a screenshot. Page content and dimensions otherwise remain unchanged.

Which direction to choose
Look at which way the top of the lettering points. If it points to the left edge of the screen, choose 90° clockwise; if it points to the right edge, choose 90° anticlockwise; if the page is upside down, choose 180°. A wrong guess is easy to undo: run the rotated file through again with the opposite quarter turn, because 90 and 270 add up to a full circle and every page returns to the angle it had before. The PDF you selected is never overwritten, since the result is a separate download.
Fixing one sideways page in a longer file
The chosen turn is applied to every page, so a report with a single sideways scan in the middle needs a short detour. Save that page as its own file with Extract PDF Pages and turn it here, remove it from the original with Delete PDF Pages, join the two files with Merge PDF, then move the page back into place with Reorder PDF Pages. Each of those steps copies pages rather than redrawing them, so typed text stays selectable throughout.
What stays the same after a turn
Only the stored rotation of each page changes. Nothing is redrawn as a picture, so the download stays close to the original size, links keep working, and bookmarks, form fields and the document title remain in the file. A certificate-backed signature is the exception: the saved copy is an edited file, so a signature applied before the turn no longer validates and should be added again after rotating.
Turn every page of a sideways PDF
People open Rotate PDF when a whole file reads on its side or upside down. A phone held in landscape while it photographs a contract, a feeder that scanned every sheet sideways, or a duplex batch that came out inverted all produce that problem. Readers and printers follow the rotation stored on each page. If that value is wrong, every person who opens the file has to turn it. Setting the value once is the point of this page.
Choose one PDF. The summary under the dropzone then shows 1 file, the size, the page count and the filename. The Rotation menu is the only control. Press Rotate PDF. The result row is labelled Rotated PDF, and the line under that label is the new file size, because this action does not attach any other detail.
Three turns, and only three
The menu offers 90° clockwise, which is selected when the page opens and is stored as 90. It offers 180°, stored as 180. It offers 90° anticlockwise, stored as 270. There is no field for 45 degrees, no place to type an angle, and no second menu that could turn page 4 differently from page 1. The same choice is written onto every page.
The choice is added to the angle already stored
Each page keeps whatever rotation it already had, and the menu amount is added to that angle. The sum is wrapped at 360 degrees. A page whose stored angle is already 90, given another clockwise quarter turn, is saved at 180. A page with no stored rotation is saved at the menu angle itself. The saved angle has to be a multiple of 90 degrees, which is all the menu can produce when the stored angle is also a quarter turn.
That write changes the Rotate entry only. It does not rewrite the page's stored width and height. A viewer that honours rotation will display a tall page as a wide page after 90 or 270. The media box numbers themselves stay as they were. Resize PDF Pages is the tool that builds a new sheet size. This one does not.
Eight landscape receipts
receipts.pdf has eight pages. Every photo was taken with the phone sideways, so the type runs vertically on each sheet. Leave the menu on 90° clockwise and press Rotate PDF. The download is receipts-rotated.pdf. Open the first page and the last page. If both are upright, the stack shared one angle. If page 3 is now sideways while the others are upright, that page did not share the stack's angle, and this menu cannot give it a different turn.
There is no per-page picker
Rotate PDF does not draw a thumbnail strip, and it does not draw the first-page preview. Preview rendering on PDF North is limited to compress, PDF to JPG, PDF to PNG, resize, page numbers and sign. After you pick a file here you see the summary and the menu, not a picture of page 1. To turn only the sideways sheets, copy those pages out with Extract PDF Pages, run Rotate PDF on that smaller file, and join it back with Merge PDF if you still need a single document. Delete PDF Pages drops a sheet. Reorder PDF Pages types a new sequence. None of those is a per-page angle on this screen.
Scans, locks and large files
A scanned page is still a PDF page. Turning it does not redraw the scan as a JPEG and does not invent a text layer. Words you could not select before the turn still cannot be selected afterwards. Extract Text from PDF reads an existing text layer. It does not perform optical character recognition, and neither does Rotate PDF.
An encrypted file stops while it is being read. The message says password-protected PDFs are not supported yet. This page has no password box. A second file is refused with the message Choose one PDF for this tool. Each file must stay within 60 MB, and the document must stay within 250 pages. Those checks run in the browser. A phone can still run out of memory on a long colour scan before either number, because the whole file is loaded in the tab. Close other heavy tabs, or finish the job on a computer. With a single file, the 60 MB cap is the one that binds. The 120 MB figure is the cap on a multi-file selection, which this tool does not accept.
What the saved copy keeps
Rotate PDF loads the document, writes a new Rotate value on each page, and saves that same document. It does not create a blank PDF and copy pages into it. Reorder, delete and extract do create a blank PDF. This rotation step does not. The rotation function does not delete the outline or the form dictionary. A certificate that covered the original bytes should be treated as no longer valid, because the save rewrites the file. Keep the signed original.
The download name drops the old extension and adds -rotated.pdf. A source called minutes.final.pdf therefore downloads as minutes.final-rotated.pdf. The file you selected on disk is left where it was.
Rotation stays in this browser
pdf-lib reads the bytes in this tab. PDF North does not receive the document. While Rotate PDF runs, the Network panel should not show the PDF being posted. The page may still load its own script from this site. That request is not your file. Close or reload the tab to drop the temporary download link.
Tips once the pages stand upright
If blank backs were scanned with the stack, remove them with Delete PDF Pages after you can read the page numbers. The longer note on a quarter turn is rotate a PDF 90 degrees. Resize PDF Pages changes paper size and is not a substitute for a turn. Compress PDF flattens pages and belongs only to a size cap. Add PDF Page Numbers belongs after the orientation is final, so the labels sit where you expect. Reorder PDF Pages is a separate job if the sequence, not the angle, is what is wrong.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Rotate PDF menu include a 45 degree turn?
No. The menu has three entries: 90° clockwise (stored as 90, and selected when the page opens), 180°, and 90° anticlockwise (stored as 270). There is no typed angle.
What filename does minutes.final.pdf receive after Rotate PDF?
minutes.final-rotated.pdf. The previous extension is dropped and -rotated.pdf is added. The result row is titled Rotated PDF, and the line under that title is the download's size.
Does Rotate PDF rewrite the page width and height?
No. It writes the Rotate entry and leaves the stored media box alone. A viewer that honours rotation can still display a tall page as a wide page after a quarter turn. Sheet size is a job for Resize PDF Pages.
What angle is saved if a page is already at 90 degrees and you choose clockwise again?
180 degrees. The menu amount is added to the angle already stored on that page, then wrapped at a full circle. A page with no stored rotation is saved at the menu angle itself.
Will Rotate PDF make the words on a phone scan selectable?
No. The scan remains a picture. The turn does not add a text layer and does not redraw the page as a JPEG. Text that was already selectable is not flattened by this step.
Why is there no picture of page 1 on Rotate PDF?
This mode does not render the preview canvas. After the file is read you see the summary and the Rotation menu. There is no thumbnail strip, and the one menu angle is applied to every page.
