Compress a PDF to 2 MB for Portals and Attachments

Many job portals, visa forms and course dropboxes reject anything over 2 MB. PDF North can rebuild scanned pages at a lower quality so the file often lands nearer that cap. It does not promise 2.00 MB, because the remaining pages and their photos decide the result.

How to do this in PDF North

Remove every page the destination does not need with extract or delete, so you are not shrinking unused sheets.
Run Balanced compression and read the new size in the result panel.
Only move to Stronger or Maximum if you are still over 2 MB and the text is still readable at normal zoom.

When 2 MB is realistic

A short, already-clean scan of a few A4 pages often drops under 2 MB at Balanced or Stronger. A 40-page photo-heavy report usually will not, unless you split it or extract the signed leaf the form actually wants. PDF North reports the new byte size so you can stop guessing.

Size first, then quality

This compressor flattens each page into an image. Selectable text, links and form fields disappear. Start conservative: a readable 1.8 MB file beats an unreadable 1.2 MB file. If Maximum still overshoots 2 MB, the source has too many pages or too much photographic data — split the packet rather than destroying the remaining type.

Sister size targets

A 5 MB university upload is a different problem — see compress under 5 MB. Gmail’s attachment ceiling is much higher; use compress for Gmail when the mailbox, not a portal, is the limit. Tight 200 KB forms still belong on compress for email.

Frequently asked questions

Will this always produce a 2 MB PDF?

No. The tool shows the new size. 2 MB is the destination rule you are aiming at, not a slider the compressor can lock.

Should I compress the whole report or one page?

Extract the page the portal asked for first. Compressing a 30-page original to hit 2 MB usually wrecks the type.

Does aiming at 2 MB upload the file?

No. Rendering stays in this browser. You attach the downloaded copy to the portal yourself.

Why did a text PDF barely shrink?

Digitally created text has little image data to rebuild. Delete unused pages; another compressor will not invent 2 MB from an already-efficient file.

Which level should I try first for a 2 MB portal?

Balanced. Read the size the tool prints, then try Stronger and Maximum only while the type is still readable at normal zoom and the file is still over 2 MB. Nothing on the page locks the result at exactly 2.00 MB.

Can I compress a fillable form to get under 2 MB?

Not if someone still has to complete the form. Compression redraws pages as images and the fields disappear. Extract or delete unused pages, or ask the portal for a larger cap.
