Split a Large PDF into Smaller Files

A 40-page scan is awkward to email and harder to review. PDF North copies consecutive groups of pages into new PDFs on your device. Set pages per file to 1 for one sheet each, or to a larger count such as 10 when a portal wants shorter parts. This is the long-file job. Extract PDF Pages is the job when you need a scattered selection such as pages 3, 8 and 14–16 in one PDF.

Open Split PDF

Your file stays private. PDF North tools run in this browser tab. Following a guide and opening a tool does not upload the document.

How to do this in PDF North

  1. Delete blank sheets you do not want taking a slot in a group, then open Split PDF and choose the large document.
  2. Set pages per file to 1 for individual pages, or a larger number for chapters or shorter attachments.
  3. Split and download each part. Open the pieces you will send before you compress any of them.

Worked example: a 40-page lease, ten pages per file

The file is lease.pdf, 40 pages, mostly a phone scan. Set Pages per file to 10. You get four separate downloads, not a zip: lease-part-1.pdf is pages 1–10, lease-part-2.pdf is 11–20, lease-part-3.pdf is 21–30 and lease-part-4.pdf is 31–40. The label on each download names that page span. Set the same file to 15 pages per file and the last group is shorter: part 1 is pages 1–15, part 2 is 16–30, and part 3 is 31–40. The tool does not pad the remainder and does not stop early. A 12-page PDF split every 3 pages is the smaller version of the same rule: four files, pages 1–3, 4–6, 7–9 and 10–12.

Split versus extract

Split walks the whole document from page 1 and creates a file for every consecutive group. Extract PDF Pages builds one new PDF from the numbers you type, including a non-consecutive list. Use extract when a recipient asked for pages 3, 8 and 14–16 only. Use split when every chapter, or every page, should become its own download. Delete PDF Pages first if blank backs would otherwise sit inside a group and make a part longer than the reader needs.

Page count is not a megabyte cap

Splitting copies existing pages, so a photo-heavy part can stay large. It does not compress images, and it cannot aim at a file size or follow bookmarks. If lease-part-1.pdf is still over a mailbox or portal cap, run that part through Compress PDF and accept flattened pages, or extract a still smaller selection. Outlook, Gmail and a 1 MB form are different caps — use compress for Outlook, compress for Gmail or compress to 1 MB only when that destination is what actually failed. Rejoin parts later with Merge PDF if you still need one file; merging copies pages and does not shrink them.

The original stays intact

Split copies pages. It does not overwrite lease.pdf. Keep that original as the archive and send only the parts a recipient needs. Processing stays in this browser, so the long file is not uploaded to PDF North. Each source file is limited to 60 MB and 250 pages. Those are memory limits, and a phone can still fail before them on a long scan. Password-protected PDFs are not supported. The downloads are separate PDFs named from the original plus part-1, part-2 and so on.

Frequently asked questions

Can I split a large PDF by bookmarks or by megabytes?

No. Split PDF groups consecutive pages by the number you enter. It does not read bookmarks and it does not stop at a file-size target. Shorten the page count, then compress a part that is still too big to send.

What files do I get from a 40-page PDF split every 10 pages?

Four separate PDFs: pages 1–10, 11–20, 21–30 and 31–40. A source named lease.pdf downloads as lease-part-1.pdf through lease-part-4.pdf. They are not bundled in a zip.

Where do leftover pages go if the split does not divide evenly?

The last file holds the remainder and is shorter than the others. A 40-page PDF with pages per file set to 15 becomes three downloads: pages 1–15, 16–30 and 31–40.

Will splitting a scan make each part small enough to email?

Only by cutting the page count. Image data is copied, not recompressed. If a part is still over the mailbox limit, compress that part and keep the unsplit original until the smaller copy is readable.

Should I split, or extract the pages someone named?

Split when the whole document should become consecutive groups. Extract when you need one PDF of specific pages, including pages that are not next to each other. Delete blank sheets before either step if they should not travel.

Does splitting a large PDF upload it?

No. Groups are copied in this browser. The original stays on your device, and each part is a temporary local download. The limits are 60 MB and 250 pages.
