Extract PDF Pages Without Uploading the Document

Sharing a full report when someone needs three pages is both clumsy and careless. PDF North copies only the pages you list into a new file. The source stays on your device and is not uploaded, and the pages you leave out are not carried into the new PDF as hidden content.

Open Extract PDF Pages

Your file stays private. PDF North tools run in this browser tab. Following a guide and opening a tool does not upload the document.

How to do this in PDF North

  1. Open the source in a reader and note the page numbers you need, including ranges such as 1-3, 8, 10.
  2. Open Extract PDF Pages, choose the source PDF, and type that selection into the pages box.
  3. Extract, then open the new PDF and confirm the page count, the order and the first and last pages before you send it.

How selections are read

Use commas between items and a hyphen for a range. 1-3, 8, 10 gives five pages: 1, 2, 3, 8 and 10. Spaces around commas and hyphens are fine. The order you type is the order you get, so 10, 1-3 puts page 10 first and then pages 1 to 3. A repeated number is kept once, at the first place you wrote it, so 2, 2-4 gives pages 2, 3 and 4. A range that runs backwards, such as 5-2, or a number beyond the last page is rejected with a message naming the valid span, for example “outside 1-24”. The tool does not guess what you meant and does not quietly drop the bad part. Use the page numbers your PDF reader shows in its own page box, not the numbers printed in the footer. A report with roman-numeral front matter often has printed page 1 on PDF page 5.

Worked example: three pages from a 24-page report

The file is annual-report.pdf, 24 pages. A colleague needs the summary on page 2 and the figures on pages 14 and 15. Enter 2, 14-15 and extract. The download is annual-report-extracted.pdf with three pages: page 1 of the new file is the summary, pages 2 and 3 are the figures. The original annual-report.pdf is not changed and stays on your device. If the colleague would rather read the figures first, enter 14-15, 2 instead. You do not need a separate reorder step for a short extract, although Reorder PDF Pages is there if you want to change the sequence afterwards.

What travels with the extracted pages

Each kept page is copied as a PDF page with its text, images and page size. Nothing is flattened into a picture, so selectable text stays selectable. The extract is built so that pages you left behind do not ride along unseen. A plain page copy can follow a link or a form field back to a removed page and write that whole page into the file, invisible but still readable by software. PDF North cuts those paths: links that point to removed pages are dropped, links between two kept pages are pointed at the new copies, and form fields keep only their visible appearance. Bookmarks and the original document properties, such as title and author, are not copied into the new file. The new file still gets its own fresh properties, so run Remove PDF Metadata on the extract if it is leaving your organisation.

Extract, delete or split

Extract keeps a chosen subset in one new PDF. Delete PDF Pages removes a chosen subset and keeps the rest. Split PDF turns the whole file into consecutive groups, each as its own download. If you need everything except a cover and a blank back page, delete is faster than listing every remaining page. If you need pages 3, 8 and 14-16 together, extract is the right job. If every chapter of a long scan should become its own file, split it, as described in split a large PDF.

Limits and useful next steps

The source can be up to 60 MB and 250 pages. Those are memory limits for this browser, not an upload cap, and a phone can run out of memory earlier on a long photo scan. Password-protected PDFs are not supported: the tool says so rather than trying to unlock them. Once the extract is right, add page numbers with Add PDF Page Numbers if the recipient will refer to pages by number. Join it with another document in Merge PDF if it belongs in a packet. Compress it only if the destination has a size limit, because compression rebuilds pages as images.

Frequently asked questions

Can I extract pages 1-3 and 10 in one file?

Yes. Enter 1-3, 10. The new PDF contains those four pages in that order, as one download named after the source with -extracted on the end.

Can I change the order while extracting?

Yes. Pages come out in the order you type them. 10, 1-3 puts page 10 first. Repeating a number does not duplicate the page; it is kept once, at its first position.

Does extract flatten the pages?

No. Selected pages are copied as PDF pages, so text stays selectable and each page keeps its size. Compression is the tool that rebuilds pages as images.

Can hidden content from the pages I left out end up in the new file?

The extract is built to prevent that. Links and form-field references that point at removed pages are cut, so those pages are not written into the new PDF. Visible content on the pages you kept is copied as it is, so check those pages for anything you should not send.

Why does it say my selection is outside the page range?

A number is higher than the page count, or a range runs backwards such as 9-4. Use the PDF page numbers from your reader’s page box, which can differ from the numbers printed in the footer.

Is the source PDF uploaded?

No. The file is read and the pages are copied in this browser tab. The original is not sent to PDF North, and the download comes from a temporary local link that is released when you reload or close the tab.
