How to use Add Watermark to PDF
- Choose one PDF.
- Enter the watermark text and choose its page range, position, size, colour, opacity and angle.
- Add the watermark and download the finished PDF.
What this tool changes
Custom text is drawn onto the selected pages using an embedded bold font. Existing content remains underneath, and the original PDF is not overwritten.

The watermark becomes visible page content in the saved copy. It communicates status or ownership but does not encrypt the PDF or prevent copying. The mark is ordinary text drawn on top of each page, so it can usually be selected in a viewer and deleted by anyone with a PDF editor. It is drawn as one line with no wrapping, and the text box accepts up to 120 characters. The font covers Western European letters, so accented characters such as é, ü and ñ work, but Greek, Cyrillic, Chinese, Arabic or emoji characters stop the tool with an error instead of producing a file.
Add a text watermark to a PDF without uploading it
Select a PDF, enter the exact text you want to display and choose which pages should receive it. PDF North writes the watermark into a new downloadable copy inside this browser tab. The selected document is not sent to the PDF North server, which is useful when marking business reports, client proofs or other files that should not enter an upload queue.
Mark a PDF as confidential, draft or sample
Visible watermarks help readers understand the status of a document immediately. CONFIDENTIAL can flag restricted circulation, DRAFT can prevent an unfinished proposal from being mistaken for an approved version, and SAMPLE or PROOF can identify preview material. You can also use a business name, project name, copyright notice or “For internal use only” when attribution or handling instructions matter.
Choose text size, colour, opacity and angle
Large diagonal text through the centre is difficult to miss and suits status labels. A smaller horizontal mark in a corner is less intrusive and works for a company name or ownership notice. Opacity controls how strongly the mark appears over existing content: 20–30% is a useful starting point for a readable watermark that does not overwhelm the page, while a higher setting creates a more prominent warning.
Choose a colour that contrasts with the document while keeping the underlying text readable. Dark red is the default because it communicates a clear status label on many white pages. Black or grey is quieter; another brand colour can make client-facing documents feel consistent. Always open the finished PDF and check several different pages, because backgrounds and layouts can change through a document.
Watermark every page or only a selected range
Use the first and last page controls to mark the whole PDF or one continuous section. Leaving a cover unmarked can keep a proposal presentation clean while adding DRAFT to the working pages behind it. Marking only an appendix can distinguish reference material from the main report. The tool checks that the chosen range exists and will not apply text outside the selected PDF pages.
Does a watermark protect or encrypt a PDF?
A visible watermark communicates ownership, status or intended use, but it is not encryption and does not technically prevent copying, printing or editing. Do not rely on a watermark alone for access control, legal redaction or protection of secrets. PDF North does not currently add passwords or permissions. Use appropriate specialist security software when the document must be restricted rather than simply labelled.
Best order for organising and watermarking a PDF
Finish the page structure first, then add the watermark. Use Merge PDF before watermarking when several files must become one document. Fix the sequence with Reorder PDF Pages, and remove blank or duplicate pages with Delete PDF Pages. Applying the watermark last ensures that its page range matches the final document.
What changes in the downloaded file?
The tool embeds a standard bold font and draws your chosen text onto each selected page. It keeps the existing page dimensions and does not flatten the document into page images. The source file remains untouched on your device. As with any PDF edit, interactive forms, signatures or specialised document features can behave differently after saving, so retain the original and review the new copy before replacing, filing or distributing it.
Private browser processing
The selected PDF is read into browser memory, edited locally and offered as a temporary download. Close or reload the page to release the temporary download URL. Device memory still limits very large or complex jobs, and password-protected PDFs are not supported. PDF North limits each document to 60 MB and 250 pages to reduce the risk of overwhelming the browser.
Frequently asked questions
Does a watermark lock or encrypt the PDF?
No. The watermark is visible text on the pages you choose. It can say CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, SAMPLE or a name you type, but it does not add a password, stop copying or redact what is already printed on the page.
Can I watermark only some pages?
Yes. Set the first and last PDF page to mark. The tool checks that the range exists and does not draw outside it. A cover can stay unmarked while later pages receive the label.
What do watermark opacity and angle do?
Opacity runs from 10 to 100. Around 25 is a readable mark that still lets the page show through. Angle runs from -90 to 90 degrees, and the default is a diagonal -35 degrees. Font size runs from 12 to 96. Check several pages, because backgrounds differ.
Is my PDF uploaded to add the watermark?
No. The PDF is edited in this browser with an embedded bold font, and the original is not overwritten. Finish any merge, reorder or delete step first so the page range matches the document you will share. Password-protected PDFs are not supported.
Why does my watermark look smaller on some pages?
Long text is shrunk to fit. Before drawing, the tool measures the text at your chosen font size and, if it would be wider than the page minus about 1 cm on each side, scales it down for that page only, never below 12 points. In a file that mixes landscape and portrait sheets, the portrait pages can therefore carry a smaller mark than their neighbours. The width is measured before the angle is applied, so a steep diagonal can still reach an edge. Shorter wording, such as DRAFT rather than DRAFT - NOT FOR CIRCULATION, keeps the size the same throughout.
Which angle works best with each watermark position?
The text turns around its first letter, not around its middle. With the default Centre position and -35 degrees, a word such as CONFIDENTIAL starts at the middle of the page and slopes down to the right, so it sits mostly in the lower half. Set the angle to 0 for a level mark across the centre. Negative angles slope downwards and positive angles slope upwards, so in a top corner use 0 or a negative angle, and in a bottom corner use 0 or a positive angle, otherwise the end of the text can run off the page. Corner marks start about 1 cm in from the edges.
