Remove PDF Metadata Before You Share a File

A PDF can carry an author name, organisation, title, keywords and creation software that never appear on the page. PDF North inspects those properties in the browser, writes a cleaned copy, and checks the saved bytes again before offering a download. The file is not uploaded at any stage.

Open Remove PDF Metadata

Your file stays private. PDF North tools run in this browser tab. Following a guide and opening a tool does not upload the document.

How to do this in PDF North

  1. Finish merges, deletes, watermarks and signatures first so later edits do not add fresh properties.
  2. Open Remove PDF Metadata, choose the finished PDF and let the browser read it.
  3. Remove and verify metadata, then open the download and confirm the pages still look correct before you send it.

What hidden properties can give away

Metadata is written by the software that made or last saved the file, often without anyone noticing. A proposal exported from a word processor can carry the author’s full name and employer. A document reused from an old project can keep the previous client’s title or subject. Keywords can hold internal codes. Creator and Producer reveal which applications were used, and the creation and modification dates show when the work was done. None of that is on the page, but anyone can see it in a reader’s document properties panel. Removing it before a file goes to a client, a tender portal or a public website stops those details travelling with the pages.

What the cleaner removes

The document information dictionary holds fields such as Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, CreationDate and ModDate. The tool clears every key in it, including custom keys that some applications add, such as a company or department name. It also removes the document-level XMP packet and any page-level XMP streams it finds. XMP is a separate block of XML that often repeats the same author and date details. Detached leftovers from earlier edits are deleted too, so an old title that is no longer linked from the document is not still sitting in the saved bytes. The result row tells you how many items were removed, or says no common metadata was found.

What it is not

Metadata removal is not redaction. Names printed on the page stay visible, and so does text hidden under a black box drawn on top of it. Comments, file attachments, filled form values, scripts and other structures outside the checked properties can remain. Photos placed in the PDF can carry their own camera data inside the image bytes, and the cleaner does not re-encode images. It also does not encrypt the file or add a password. Use specialist redaction software when visible or hidden sensitive text must be destroyed. To check what selectable text the file still contains, run it through Extract Text from PDF and read the output.

Clean last, then verify

Order matters. Merge PDF, Add Watermark to PDF, page numbering and signing all write a new file, and a new file can pick up new properties from that last save. Clean the copy you will actually send, not an earlier draft. After cleaning, the tool loads the saved bytes again and inspects them a second time. The download button appears only if that check finds no remaining document information or identified XMP. If anything is left, you get an error instead of a file that only looks clean. Still open the download in a trusted reader and check its properties panel.

Signed files and filenames

Saving any edited PDF can invalidate a certificate-backed digital signature, so keep signed originals separate and do not clean a file whose signature must stay valid. The download is named after your file with -metadata-removed on the end. The filename itself is not metadata the tool can see, so rename the file if the name reveals a client, a person or an internal project code. Each file can be up to 60 MB and 250 pages, and password-protected PDFs are not supported.

Frequently asked questions

Does removing metadata hide text on the page?

No. It clears document properties and identified XMP packets. Visible text, images and letterhead stay as they are. Use redaction software to remove visible content.

Which fields does it clear?

Every entry in the document information dictionary, including Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, the creation and modification dates and any custom keys, plus document-level and page-level XMP metadata it can identify.

Should I clean metadata before or after merging?

After. Merge, reorder, watermark or sign first, then clean the copy you will actually send so properties from the last edit do not travel with it.

How do I know the cleaned file is really clean?

The tool inspects the saved output a second time before showing a download. If any checked metadata remains, it shows an error and creates no file. You can also open the download’s document properties in your PDF reader.

Will it remove comments, attachments or form data?

No. Those are separate parts of a PDF and can remain. Delete comments and attachments in a PDF editor, and check form values before you share the file.

Is the PDF uploaded for a privacy scan?

No. Inspection, cleaning and verification run in this browser. PDF North does not receive the file, and the download comes from a temporary local link.
